Convertus York Biofuel Facility

Convertus has begun construction for the Convertus York Biofuel facility, situated on a 12-acre site next to York Region’s Materials Recovery and Transfer Facility in the Town of East Gwillimbury in York Region. This facility will convert all organic waste collected from the Region’s green bin program into certified fertilizers and renewable natural gas.

This state-of-the-art Biofuel facility will have the ability to process up to 200,000 tonnes of green bin material per year. Convertus York will significantly reduce annual transport mileage and associated GHG emissions by 15,000 tonnes per year. In addition, the switch to anaerobic digestion technology will significantly reduce the CO2 emissions of processing organic green waste by 12,000 tonnes per year.

Projected to save the Regional Municipality of York an impressive $85 million over 20 years, the Convertus York Biofuel facility is scheduled to be operational in 2027 and meet the Region’s needs through to 2047.

This project is made possible through funding support provided by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) and Ontario’s Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC).

This new Biofuel facility will:

  • Reduce annual waste transfer costs by an estimated $600,000
  • Divert up to 200,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfills every year
  • Produce approved fertilizer for use by local food growers & landscapers
  • Create renewable natural gas to help heat 5,000 local homes each year
  • Provide a local cost-effective solution for green bin processing
  • Produce over 50 jobs for contractors with the construction of the new facility
  • Provide 15 full-time positions with student job opportunities

Wet Anaerobic Digestion

Breaks down organic waste using 3 digesters (plus the capacity for future expansion) and a digestate tank.

Odour Abatement

Neutralizes odours with an ammonia scrubber, UV-C and active carbon filter, before being released through a 28m dispersion stack.

Biofuel Production

Generates up to 350,000 GJ of RNG each year, enough to power approximately 5,000 homes.

EAST GWILLIMBURY, ON – Convertus has officially received all necessary approvals and permits to start building its new Biofuel facility in York Region, marking a major step forward for one of Canada’s most exciting green energy projects. With this milestone achieved, the facility is on track to meet its 2027 operational target.
