EAST GWILLIMBURY, ON – Convertus Canada has been awarded a combined $5 million in government funding to support the development of a cutting-edge biofuel facility in York Region. The investment includes $3 million from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) as part of a broader Government of Canada initiative to support the nation’s goal of transitioning to a greener economy and achieving its net-zero targets by 2050.  This was followed by an additional $2 million in provincial funding through Ontario’s Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream. Together, this investment will support the construction and commissioning of the Convertus York Biofuel Facility.

This industry-leading facility will be the first in the country to utilize CO2 liquefaction technology, which produces liquid CO2 to be reused in industries such as food and beverage production and greenhouses. Using advanced anaerobic digestion technology, the facility will be capable of processing up to 200,000 tonnes of York Region’s organic waste annually into renewable natural gas (RNG) and organic fertilizers. When operational in 2027, the facility will generate 350,000 to 400,000 gigajoules (GJ) of RNG, enough to heat approximately 5,000 homes which will be injected into local pipelines as a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels

“The contributions from FedDev Ontario and AMIC are instrumental in bringing the Convertus York Biofuel Facility to life,” said Jamie Jongsma, CFO of Convertus Group. “This project will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it will also strengthen the local economy by creating new jobs and educational opportunities for students and will support local agriculture through the production of high-quality fertilizer. In addition to its environmental and economic impact, it will serve as a model for sustainable waste management and renewable energy production.”

These funding supports, provided by FedDev Ontario and AMIC, are essential in supporting the acquisition and implementation of cutting-edge technologies that will be employed at the Convertus York facility. Convertus York is helping York Region and Canada move toward a circular economy. It also creates local jobs during construction and operations, provides hands-on training for students, and supports York Region’s leadership in green innovation and infrastructure. The facility is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 115,000 tonnes annually – the equivalent of taking 25,000 cars off the road. This will help accelerate greenhouse gas reductions through organic waste diversion and renewable natural gas production, thereby positively contributing to regional and national environmental objectives.
