New microbes discovered at the Surrey Facility

October 28, 2025

UBC researchers identified a powerful microbe at the Surrey Biofuel Facility that supports reliable methane production in challenging conditions.

Researchers at UBC recently discovered a highly resilient microbe at the Surrey facility that thrives in the high-ammonia conditions created by protein-rich food waste, keeping methane production flowing when traditional digesters would fail. This microbe is helping maximize RNG production, prevent costly system shutdowns, and improve waste management efficiency.
