Quality Compost. Healthy Soil.

Our compost is a fine, brown, earthy mixture that is easily spreadable. It is recommended that it be mixed at a 1:10 ratio with your soil.

Peak

Peak is a high-quality compost generated from the organic waste collection from the City of Calgary’s green bins and leaf and yard trimmings, which is taken through our screening process, resulting in Source Separated Organics (SSO).

Peak Compost+

Peak Compost+ is generated from the collection of green bin waste and leaf and yard trimmings, and is also mixed with municipal dewatered biosolids, which are then taken through our screening process, resulting in Source Separated Organics (SSO).

Frequently Asked Questions

Late fall or before planting in the spring is best for application timing.

Existing Flower Beds – Add about 1.25 cm (1/2”) of compost and work thoroughly and uniformly into the soil 15 cm (6”) deep. Water until the entire root zone is saturated.

New Beds – Add 5 cm (1”) of compost and mix to at least a 30 cm (1ft) depth, then plant and water the flowers. For best results, wait 4 weeks before planting.

Vegetable Gardens – Apply about 2 cm (¾”) of compost and mix to a depth of 20 cm (8”).

*Be careful not to apply too much compost at planting time, as many vegetables won’t germinate in an abundance of nitrogen in the soil. For best results, apply at least 4 weeks before planting.*

New Lawns – Apply 5 cm (2″) of compost and mix thoroughly and uniformly to a depth of 30 cm (1ft) before you sod or seed your lawn. Water thoroughly. For best results, apply at least 4 weeks before seeding.

Established Lawns – Aerate the entire area before topdressing. Rake 1.25 cm (1/2”) of compost evenly over the area. Water thoroughly. For best results, apply in early spring or fall.

Mulching Around Trees – Arrange the mulch so that water flows away from the tree trunk. When mulching, choose a coarse-textured compost to reduce weeds and provide a thick cover to the area. Blend 1 part compost to 4 parts wood chip mulch. For best results, apply in early spring or fall.

Tree Planting – Dig a hole about 5 times the diameter of the root ball of the tree. Before planting, mix 1 part compost with 6 parts original soil, then mix thoroughly outside the hole. Place the tree in the hole and use the compost-soil mixture as backfill around the root ball. Water thoroughly. For best results, add mulch around the tree.

Peak and Peak Compost+ are made from organic waste collected from the City’s Green Bin program, and leaf and yard trimmings in Peak Compost. Additionally, Peak Compost+ also contains beneficial municipal dewatered biosolids.

When it comes to lab results, we test for 11 regulated metals, pathogens, micro- and macronutrients, and any foreign material, such as plastics.

No, they are not organic certified. However, they are CQA certified and unrestricted.
Both Peak and Peak Compost+ are classified as unrestricted Class A Compost.

Biosolids are extremely beneficial for land application because they’re rich in nutrients, a way to avoid chemical fertilizers and share similar soil benefits as compost. They’re a green and valuable source of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Biosolids are produced by going through an extensive recycling process to stabilize and treat domestic waste. Simply put, wastewater is transformed into nutrient-rich soil amendment and goes through very strict provincial regulation guidelines for chemicals, metals, and pathogens.

A common misconception is that biosolids are the same as raw sewage waste, however, biosolids are actually stabilized and highly treated to destroy pathogens. Plus, it’s another way to renew and reuse waste products.
